Gubi and Royana, in collaboration with Manifesto, announce the China premiere of the F300 lounge chair—a retro-futuristic masterpiece by French design legend Pierre Paulin that redefines the intersection of ergonomics and sculptural form.
Originally debuted in the late 1960s, the F300 remains a profound symbol of the era's avant-garde spirit. Defined by its fluid curves and weightless silhouette, the chair challenged the conventions of furniture design, earning a permanent place in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (Moma). The project celebrates the return of this iconic piece to the contemporary stage, introducing an exclusive limited-edition colorway Gubi F300 X Royana within the immersive environment of the Gubi x NANA showroom in Shanghai.
The design is anchored in a disciplined exploration of 1970s futurism, where the absence of flat surfaces creates a sense of continuous movement. Unlike the plush softness of Paulin’s Pacha Chair, the F300—alongside its companion T877 side table—utilizes a more defined, sculptural clarity. The 2025 edition reflects a modern commitment to sustainability, meticulously crafted in Italy from HiREK®, an engineered polymer derived from recycled industrial waste. This material ensures architectural durability and weather resistance while preserving the high-gloss aesthetic of the original fiberglass, allowing the design to transition seamlessly between refined interiors and open-air retreats.
The launch functions as a multifaceted cultural dialogue, bringing together global design leaders and creative visionaries. Gubi Ceo Marie Kristine Schmidt and Royana Ceo William Lin joined prominent collectors and designers to explore the enduring relevance of Paulin’s legacy. The event transformed the F300’s narrative into a sensory journey, featuring cross-cultural artistic interventions by Alejandro M. Parisi, bespoke floral installations by Hans and Harpers Floral, and a culinary exploration of the chair’s contours by #fff Studio.
The project is further immortalized through a creative campaign featuring four industry leaders across fashion, art, and interior design. These visual narratives map the F300’s expansive adaptability, proving that visionary design possesses a timeless resonance that transcends generational boundaries. Through this collaboration, the F300 is redefined not merely as a historic artifact, but as a vital participant in the future of modern habitation.
