Royana and Huang Quan revitalize a century-old residence: the historic Xu Mansion reopens as H+, a synthesis of architectural heritage, French-inspired woodcraft, and contemporary urban lifestyle.

Located on Shanxi North Road, the former residence of Xu Chongzhi - an eclectic three-story mansion built in 1925 - has been meticulously restored by Huang Quan and his WJID team. The project preserves the integrity and spirit of the original architecture while introducing a new spatial vitality suited to today’s cultural and social life.

The design is anchored in a sensitive dialogue between the building’s memory and the warmth of wood. A signature Teak Custom Color from French Classical Series is applied throughout the interior, particularly in the western kitchen and wall panel systems. Refined moldings, layered profiles, and subtle tonal variations echo the mansion’s original French-influenced elegance, allowing the new interventions to feel organically rooted in the historic structure. By aligning the wood finishes with existing window frames and architectural details, the project achieves a rare continuity in which past and present coexist without visual rupture.

Spanning approximately 800 square meters, H+ functions as a multifaceted cultural dwelling where art, furniture, and culinary experience converge. The Jia+ Cafe, nestled in a quiet corner of the estate, introduces a mood of French-style leisure and romantic calm. It serves as both a social node and a contemplative retreat, extending the residential spirit into a public yet intimate environment.

Throughout the mansion, furniture from Huang Quan’s brand Jijian is curated as active participants in the spatial narrative. Each piece becomes part of an evolving domestic scene, inviting touch, use, and emotional connection. The transition between the French Series kitchen systems and contemporary art exhibition areas embodies a distinctly Shanghai Style sensibility—a sophisticated fusion of Eastern restraint and Western refinement.

H+ is conceived as a spiritual dwelling suspended between urban memory and modern life. Through the precise application of bespoke door systems, wall treatments, and architectural detailing, the project honors the legacy of the Xu Mansion while redefining its relevance for the present day.
